A rare Second World War photograph of imported USA 2-8-0 Class S160 No. 1846 working a freight train near Quorn & Woodhouse Station on 13 May 1943. (V.R. Webster/Kidderminster Railway Museum 017608)

By the end of the Second World War, all LNER locomotives had been painted black and the Company initials abbreviated as illustrated here on Class B17 No. 2855 Middlesbrough passing through Rugby. (A.W.V. Mace: MilePost 92)

In the difficult 1950s, the Flying Scotsman locomotive was not as famous as it has become since preservation. Between June 1950 and November 1953 the engine was shedded at Leicester and, during that time, was called upon to work ‘The South Yorkshireman’, as seen here heading north at Quainton Road Station.
